Tales from the (battle)field #6

Yesterday evening we had a game at my friends house who got Big Box as a present. From big box we choose Inns & Cathedrals, Trades & Builders and Ferries. We didn't expect that Markets of Leipzig, that I brought would boost this mix so much. That was 3 player game and I ended up with 259 points. Second player 228 and third 188.

Tales from the (battle)field #5

Previous weekend I organised a little mega Carcassonne event. More as a training of facebook events. Unfortunately I have set up the time when game for third place in Russia took place, so we played with three players instead of expected 8.

I have used
2 x river
2 x base set
2 x trader & builders
2 x hills & ships
1 x princess and the dragon

around 280 tiles all together

Spin-off - South Seas

Today I would like to write few words about my without doubt favorite Carcassonne version. This was the first in the "Around the world series".

It is very unique considering graphical theme and above all rules of the game play in general. What makes South Seas spin-off so special? Well, playing it is like eating bananas in the sun while watching sea waves slowly approaching the golden sand. It is relaxing. Say good bye to stealing, blocking and huge overcrowded cities. If farming rules overwhelm you or your friends, you can forget about those too.

The theme circles around being an South Sea islanders, who gather bananas, fishes and seashels which than can then be sold to passing ships.

New Carcassonne Spin-Off - Safari

You may know about Carcassonne around the world series of Spin-Offs. Currently it consists of South Seas, Gold Rush and Amazonas. Newest one will be released this autumn in Leipzig and Essen game shows. You can read some about it now here on Carcassonne Central forum. Graphical style teleport us into Africa.

I had a chance to play it last week during 1st International Carcassonne Meeting. While I am not allowed to describe much online (anyway, it was still a prototype) it is has some nice twists to scoring points. It generally follows the around the series approach. Some ways to easy scoring, little chance to be mean and steal or block. I will constrain myself from giving any opinions of posting photos until playing the final version. The only thing that I am afraid that I do not see (at this point) how this would attract new players to the series.

More news to come.

Golden rules #6 - Never go for first choice

Never go for your first choice

Try to find some valid alternative. Consider, why this alternative is worse choice. Maybe it is not?
Maybe there is some freebie available? Always assume that the next tile is the one that he needs to connect to your city or field. If you have some chance to block him, take it immediately!

Spin-off - Star Wars and expansion 1

2015 marked release of another Carcassonne spin-off. Coincidentally day of release correlate with release of Force Awakens movie. That leads to suspicions that this is just another attempt to squeeze few additional bucks from the famous franchise. Is it only that? Does Carcassonne:Star Wars defends by itself? Would mechanics that were up this moment used to lay down rivers, road and meadows fit the galactic struggle? Carcassonne in its roots is an abstract game and all theme is just an excuse to paint something on tiles, so why not?

Components

Tile set consists of 76 tiles. Reference list can be found in download section. Distribution closely match the set from classic Carcassonne base set, with few exceptions, so the faction symbols distribute evenly among similar features. Faction symbols (Rebel Alliance, Empire, Bounty Hunters) are painted on some of the tiles. Usage of those are described later.

Player's Diary #5 - Star wars insert

Carcassonne: Star Wars spin-off expansion is coming just next wednesday, including few words regarding the expansion with grim Kylo Ren himself. Today I would like to introduce a little trick how to fit all tiles from expansion and base game into base set box without any additional inserts.

Right part is made from standard insert folded in half, while left part is made from expansion's insert.

Carcassonne accessories - GeekMod Insert

Carcassonne collection can get quickly out of control. Even after purchasing first few expansions, carrying and storing may become a problem.  Moving each expansion in separate box means carrying a lot of air.  Following solution allows to fit base set with few expansions in base set's box. Following pictures show tiles from old edition bit they are compatible with new edition considering size.

Let's start from the beginning.

Strategy 101 #2 - Blocking is easy

Blocking is placing  your tiles next to opponents features, in a way that they cannot be finished. Each tile may be defined by it's edges configuration. If there is road, city or field on each edge. If to complete the city, player needs some tile, with configuration that so noty exists, such city is blocked and meeples occpying it, are trapped.

There is no tile to fit in space 1, so neighboring city, cloister and road are blocked. Red player blocked purple player with tile number 2.

Player's Diary #3 - Carcassonne für Zwei unboxing/review

Just few days ago I have received Carcassonne for 2 (2017), which re-implements Carcassonne Travel, which was published back in 2007. Following post was intended to be just a quick unboxing text with some photos, but I came into conclusion that this edition is purely about components. Unboxing is in fact a review. If you are one of those two board gamers, not familiar with what Carcassonne base game is, then you can find dozens of reviews online. Rules are exactly the same here. Last remark is even more important, because currently only German version is available.

Game is stored in solid metal tin

Golden rules #5 - Make points not landscape

Make points, not landscape

This is common mistake for beginner players. They tend to choose placement of their tiles based on visual arrangement of landscape over strategical benefit. It may be itching to fill that one empty spot that is missing to create a beautiful map of roads, cities and fields. Consider if it will give you the most points in the end.

Expansion 1: Inns & Cathedrals

Is there even a point to write this review? Just buy it and have a nice day!

There is considerable chance that you have this expansion already, because it is part of Big Boxes or often sold bundled with the base game. If you are still reading this let's go through description of this expansion, because there can be only one answer for question "to buy or not to buy" and it has been already given.
I'll be providing some strategy advises later, so bare with me anyway.

Player's diary #2 - My thoughts on insert making

Insert making is so boring. So this time I decided to spice things up a bit and make it as fast as possible (without cutting myself). This made me thinking about some things that you may not hear in insert making tutorial online.

Do not use glue

All tutorials tells you to use glue. Use 3mm wide double side tape, believe me.

- No mess,
- No smell or toxic fumes,
- No spills or leaking,
- No pins necessary,
- It holds tight from the first second,
- Easy to apply,

Use proper knife

Spin-off - The Ark of the Covenant

Is it possible for a Christian-themed game to be any good?

Today I would like to introduce one of the oldest spin-off in Carcassonne series, The Ark of the Covenant. There is not many reviews regarding that since availability of this game is very low.

Game is based on Old Testament story. There are prophets, deserts and apparently, the Ark, which travels along the map. The game is targeted for religious market, but the whole theme is not overwhelming in any matter. I could be as well called "Carcassonne: Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Components

All tiles are painted in yellowish colors, which represents deserts with sheeps and wolfes running around, separated by grey cities. It is good enough, the colors are vivid (as much as dessert can by vivid) and pictures are sharp. Standard meeples are used with the addition of the ark token. There are versions of the game with The Ark made of wood or token put into plastic stand.
This is only (that I know of) Carcassonne spin-of that do not have "C" symbol on it's back.

Player's diary #1 - My collection of classic Carcassonne

I would like to start my diary with presentation of my classic Carcassonne collection. As of beginning of 2018 it consists of two base sets and around 29 expansions (still missing few official ones). I'm a completionist but decided to collect only official expansions, this way maybe my collection one day will be completed.

I really wanted to able to put my whole collection into one box, and easily carry it around. Solution popped up, when I purchased Big Box number 5.
